New Delhi [India], June 17 : Cloudy skies and afternoon showers brought much-needed relief from the scorching heat in Delhi and its neighbouring cities on Tuesday. The dip in temperature came as a respite after days of intense summer conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a weather alert stating that light to moderate rainfall is expected at several locations, while isolated regions in parts of North and Central India may experience heavy rainfall (7–11 cm). The affected states include Bihar, East Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Madhya Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka, Punjab, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand.
At 2:15 PM, the IMD observed that radar data indicated the possibility of light to moderate rain, hailstorms, thunderstorms, and lightning accompanied by gusty winds ranging between 50–60 kmph, possibly reaching up to 80 kmph in Delhi. These conditions were forecast to remain valid till 4:15 PM.
In a broader update, the IMD said the southwest monsoon has further advanced over additional areas, including parts of North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and Bihar. The monsoon is progressing steadily and is expected to cover more regions—including Rajasthan and East Uttar Pradesh—within the next two days.
The department also reported the presence of two low-pressure systems: one over southwest Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, and another over Gujarat and its surrounding areas. Both systems are expected to move gradually—west-northwestwards and northwards respectively—within the next 24 hours, likely enhancing rainfall activity across the affected zones.
