Defence Ministry Inks Rs 1,561 Crore Contract With Heavy Vehicles Factory For Army

New Delhi [India]: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has inked a significant Rs 1,560.52 crore deal with the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) for the procurement of 47 T-72 Bridge Laying Tanks (BLTs). The move aims to bolster the Indian Army’s operational capabilities and enhance its mechanized forces’ mobility and tactical flexibility.

The contract, finalized in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, represents a major step toward modernizing the Army’s battlefield infrastructure, as per the MoD’s official statement.

Strategic Importance of T-72 BLTs
The T-72 BLTs are specialized vehicles designed to launch bridges in both offensive and defensive operations. They play a critical role in ensuring battlefield mobility by providing bridging support for tanks and armoured vehicles in complex terrains, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.

Alignment with Aatmanirbhar Bharat Initiative
This acquisition falls under the “Buy-IDDM (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured)” category, aligning with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The project not only strengthens the Army’s capabilities but also boosts domestic manufacturing and technological innovation in the defence sector, contributing to the “Make-in-India” vision.

The introduction of T-72 BLTs will significantly enhance the Army’s ability to execute operations with improved mobility and tactical flexibility, reinforcing India’s self-reliance in defence production and operational readiness.
