Delhi Jal Board Approves Decentralized Sewage Treatment Plants To Clean Yamuna

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has given the go-ahead for a budget of over ₹600 crore to build 11 decentralized sewage treatment plants (DSTPs) and one big plant. This is a big step in cleaning up the Yamuna River. Along with the DSTPs, a sewage treatment plant (STP) that can handle 15 million gallons of sewage per day will be developed in the Zindpur area for ₹250 crore.

The new decentralized plants will be put along drains and in places where the sewage system isn’t good enough, unlike existing, large-scale STPs. The DJB runs 37 STPs at now, and most of them are taken care of by private companies.

The government has granted ₹283.67 crore for building DSTPs and sewage pumping stations in the Najafgarh drainage zone, which includes Kair, Kanganheri, Kakrola, and Dichaon Kalan. This price also covers 15 years of operation and upkeep. The same zone has been given an extra ₹157.90 crore for DSTPs in Galibpur, Saranpur, and Shikarpur.

The DJB’s existing capacity is not enough to handle all of the city’s sewage. The board is working to improve current plants and is giving the go-ahead for new DSTPs to fix this. An extra ₹188.20 crore has been sanctioned for building four DSTPs and a sewage pumping station in the regions of Hasanpur, Jaffarpur, Kazipur, and Khera Dabar.

People who live in Outer Delhi regions like Najafgarh, Chattarpur, Matiala, Bijwasan, Mundka, and Narela will mostly benefit from these developments. As part of the larger attempt to clean up the Yamuna, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also agreed to the development of 27 decentralized sewage treatment plants earlier this year.
