Deadly Shooting in Newark Leaves Two Dead, Three Others Injured

The city of Newark is reeling after a deadly shooting on Saturday evening resulted in two fatalities, including a child, and left three others wounded. The tragedy occurred on Chancellor Avenue near Wainwright Street around 7 p.m., prompting a massive police and investigative response.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, officers arriving at the scene found five victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Two Pronounced Dead

Two of the victims were rushed to University Hospital, where they were tragically pronounced dead:

  • A 10-year-old boy
  • A 21-year-old woman

Their names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Three other victims—an 11-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man, and a 60-year-old man—were also injured. All three are currently reported to be in stable condition, though the extent of their injuries has not been released.

Mayor and Governor Respond

The shocking violence drew immediate condemnation from state and city leaders.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy stated on X that he had been updated on the shooting, asking the public to “Please pray for the victims and their families.”

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka called Saturday “a dark and devastating day in Newark,” and vowed a relentless pursuit of justice.

Mayor Ras J. Baraka: “We will not rest until there is justice for the parents and families left behind in unspeakable pain and grief… We urge the killer to turn himself in, as there is no safe place to hide.”

Investigation Underway

The scene on Chancellor Avenue was cordoned off Saturday night as police collected evidence, with numerous shell casings marked along the sidewalk.

At this time, authorities have not disclosed what triggered the shooting, nor have any details about the suspect(s) or any arrests been released. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed the investigation is active and ongoing.

A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at 1-877-847-7432.
