RENO, Nevada— On Monday morning, July 28, 2025, a mass shooting broke out outside the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada. Three people died, and several others were hurt. The event happened around 7:25 AM local time, close to the valet car park of the well-known casino and hotel complex in the northwest part of the state.
The Reno Police Department says that police quickly responded to reports of an active shooter, and media, including the New York Post and Associated Press, have confirmed this. The suspect, a grown man, was found by police, and then there was a shooting involving police. Police shot the gunman, whose name has not been made public, and then arrested him. He is now in the hospital in serious condition.
Chris Crawforth, the police chief of Sparks, said during a press conference that his department is in charge of the investigation. He said that the gunman walked through a car park and went up to a gathering of people at the valet area. At first, his gun didn’t work, but then he got it to work and started shooting. One person died at the site, while another died later in the hospital from their injuries. The attacker then ran away across the car park, shot at a casino security guard, and killed a driver in a passing car before the police got there.
Two of the injured are said to be in critical condition, while a third individual was treated and sent home from the hospital. Three other people also got hurt, but not badly. One was grazed by a bullet, another had acute anxiety, and the third was hurt while running. An cop also got hurt, perhaps from pieces of glass.
There were a lot of emergency vehicles, including ambulances, at the scene while first responders attempted to treat the injured and keep the area safe. One of Reno’s biggest casino and hotel complexes, the Grand Sierra Resort, said it was “heartbroken” at the “senseless violence.”
Devon Reese, a member of the Reno City Council, talked about the tragedy on Facebook. He said he was very sad about the deaths and spoke out against the widespread problem of gun violence in the U.S. He stressed that Reno is a strong community, but that these kinds of terrible things may happen there too. He also said that this kind of violence should not become normal.
Reese wrote in his article, “Sadly, lives were lost this morning in Reno in yet another act of pointless gun violence.” “My heart aches for the victims, their families, and everyone in our community.” Reno is strong, but we are not immune to the gun violence that is sweeping the country. We can’t let this happen. Not here. Not anywhere.
The police said that there is no known link between the gunman and the victims, and they don’t know why the crime happened. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and the Nevada State Police are helping with the investigation, which is still going on. Officials have told people not to go to the area while the investigation is going on.
This event is part of a worrying trend of gun violence in the U.S. The Center for Gun Violence Solutions says that in 2023, Nevada had a gun mortality rate that was 34% higher than the national average.
