A Nail-Biting Finale
Heading into the final game with scores level at 6.5-6.5, Gukesh delivered a stellar performance under immense pressure, clinching the title in dramatic fashion. The match marked him as the 18th champion in chess history.
A Journey of Excellence
Earlier in April, Gukesh had already made headlines by winning the FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament 2024, becoming the youngest challenger for the world title. His meteoric rise has been marked by consistent performances, culminating in this historic achievement.
An Emotional Victory
Overwhelmed with emotion, Gukesh broke down in tears after his victory, calling it “the best moment of his life” during the post-match press conference.
Meanwhile, Ding Liren, the outgoing champion, graciously acknowledged his opponent’s triumph. “I was totally in shock when I realized I made a blunder. I will continue to play. I think I played my best tournament of the year. It could be better, but considering yesterday’s lucky survival, it is a fair result to lose in the end. I have no regrets,” said Liren.
Road to the Championship
The championship saw several intense games, with Game 13 ending in a draw after 68 moves, leaving both players with 6.5 points each before the final round. One decisive move in the final game ultimately crowned Gukesh as the champion.
A New Era for Chess
Gukesh’s victory is being celebrated as a proud moment for India and the global chess community, as he ushers in a new era in the sport. His journey exemplifies perseverance, talent, and youthful brilliance.
This win not only cements Gukesh’s name in chess history but also paves the way for many aspiring players worldwide.
