Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh made history on Thursday by becoming the youngest-ever FIDE World Chess Champion, defeating reigning champion Ding Liren in a closely fought 7.5-6.5 battle.
Coach’s Advice: Enjoy Chess
Gukesh’s coach, Vishnu Prasanna, attributed his pupil’s success to his joy for the game:
“I always told Gukesh to enjoy chess. If you enjoy the game, you have a better chance of excelling. This should be the primary goal. A lot still needs to align for him to achieve what Vishwanathan Anand has done, but this is a significant milestone.”
Prasanna also recalled the pivotal moment in the final game:
“When Ding Liren played A4, I thought it would likely lead to a draw and the tiebreak. But as the game progressed, Gukesh maintained his focus, and his perseverance paid off.”
Breaking Records and Garnering Praise
At just 18 years old, Gukesh shattered Garry Kasparov’s record of becoming the youngest champion at 22. Reflecting on this, Prasanna said:
“Kasparov winning at 22 was thought to be unbeatable. Gukesh has done something remarkable. It’s a record that will be very hard to break.”
The legendary Kasparov himself commended Gukesh, stating:
“My congratulations to D Gukesh on his victory today. He has summited the highest peak of all: making his mother happy.”
The Final Showdown
The championship, tied at 6.5-6.5, came down to a dramatic last game. Gukesh displayed extraordinary composure, securing the victory with a score of 7.5-6.5.
Ding Liren, reflecting on his loss, expressed no regrets:
“I was in shock after my blunder. While I believe this was my best tournament of the year, the result is fair. I have no regrets and will continue to play.”
A Historic Journey
Gukesh’s achievement builds on his earlier success in April 2024, when he became the youngest-ever winner of the FIDE Candidates Tournament, earning him a spot to challenge for the world title.
In his post-match press conference, an emotional Gukesh described the victory as the “best moment of his life.”
India’s Chess Legacy Continues
Gukesh’s triumph solidifies India’s dominance in chess, following in the footsteps of legends like Viswanathan Anand. His victory adds to the nation’s growing stature in the global chess arena, inspiring a new generation of players.
The FIDE official handle aptly declared:
“Gukesh D is the YOUNGEST WORLD CHAMPION in history!”
