Cyclonic Storm Fengal is expected to make landfall along the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on Saturday evening, bringing wind speeds of 70-80 kmph, with gusts up to 90 kmph, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD reported that Cyclone Fengal, currently over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is moving west-northwest at 10 kmph. The system is situated approximately 100 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 100 km southeast of Chennai.
“It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, close to Puducherry, as a cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 70-80 kmph, gusting to 90 kmph, during the evening of November 30. There is a possibility of a slowdown in the system’s movement as it approaches the coast. The system is being continuously monitored,” the IMD stated.
Wind speeds in the coastal regions between Tiruvallur and Mayiladuthurai are anticipated to range from 70-90 kmph during the cyclone’s landfall, with speeds of 50-70 kmph expected on Sunday.
Heavy Rainfall and Waterlogging
As the cyclone nears, heavy rains have lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu, causing waterlogging in Chennai. Key areas like New Washermanpet, the Gemini Flyover, and Mount Road reported ankle-deep water, slowing traffic and causing difficulties for commuters.
Rough sea conditions have been observed, with strong winds and persistent rainfall since last night. The IMD is monitoring the storm using Doppler weather radars in Chennai and Sriharikota, along with satellite data.
Safety Measures and Travel Advisories
Authorities have advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to high waves and turbulent conditions. Residents have been urged to stay away from beaches such as Marina Beach, Pattinapakkam, and Edward Elliot’s Beach. Tourist spots in Puducherry have also been temporarily closed.
Airlines have issued travel advisories, cautioning passengers about potential disruptions due to heavy rains. Chennai Airport has reported delays in some flight services.
The government has activated disaster management protocols, urging people to stay indoors and follow updates for further instructions.
