Curfew Imposed in Nepal’s Birgunj Amid Communal Tensions Triggered by TikTok Video

Authorities in Birgunj, a city near the India-Nepal border, have imposed and extended a curfew due to escalating communal tensions. The unrest began after a TikTok video posted by two youths from Dhanusha’s Kamala Municipality reportedly contained religiously sensitive content, sparking protests between different community groups.

The curfew, initially set from 6 pm Monday to 8 am Tuesday, has been extended multiple times and is now in effect until 6 pm Tuesday. It covers key areas of Birgunj, including Bus Park, Nagwa, Inarwa, Sirsia River, Gandak Chowk, and Shankaracharya Gate. Residents are prohibited from moving outside their homes except for essential activities. Security forces have been authorized to enforce the curfew strictly, including using force if necessary, while essential services and emergency vehicles are allowed movement.

The unrest intensified after a mosque in Kamala Municipality was vandalised, leading to street protests, rallies, and tyre-burning in Birgunj. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further escalation.
