Curfew Continues In Nagpur After Violent Clashes; FIR Filed Against 51 Individuals

Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India]: Curfew remains in effect for the second consecutive day across 10 police station limits in Nagpur, Maharashtra, following violent clashes that erupted on March 17.

An FIR has been registered at Ganeshpeth Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with charges under the Arms Act, Maharashtra Police Act, and the Prevention of Public Property Damage Act.

The FIR, filed by Police Inspector Jitendra Baburao Gadge, names 51 individuals, including several minors. The accused are primarily from localities such as Jafar Nagar, Tajbagh, Mominpura, and Bhalaadapura.

According to the FIR:

“The protest turned violent when the crowd began hurling stones and throwing petrol bombs at police officers. Police were attacked with deadly weapons like axes and iron rods. Despite repeated warnings, the crowd continued their violent actions, posing a serious threat to public safety.”

In a disturbing development, the FIR also revealed that:

“During the violence in Nagpur, one of the accused exploited the darkness to assault a woman police officer on duty, attempting to remove her clothes while making obscene gestures and misbehaving with other women personnel.”

Government Response:

Union Minister Prahlad Joshi assured that the Maharashtra government is taking strict action against those responsible.

“Govt is handling the situation very well and such things should not happen… Maharashtra govt is taking action against those involved,” Joshi said.

BJP MP Ashok Chavan described the incident as unfortunate but assured that the situation is now under control.

“This is a sad incident. The police have brought the situation under control, and the truth will emerge after investigation,” Chavan added.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde condemned the violence and stated that authorities are investigating whether it was a “pre-planned conspiracy.”

“The incident which occurred in Nagpur is unfortunate. Police are investigating if this was a pre-planned conspiracy. Four DCP-level officers were injured in this incident… Strict action will be taken. I appeal to all to maintain peace,” Shinde stated.

The situation remains tense, with authorities urging residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
