New Delhi [India], June 18: Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary D. Raja on Wednesday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi address Parliament regarding the role played by the United States during Operation Sindoor.
Raja emphasized that political parties have every right to seek transparency and to call for a special parliamentary session to be briefed on the US’s involvement, if any, in the operation.
“Mr. Modi, as the PM, must tell the country what exactly happened. Why are Parliament, political parties, and the people of India not being taken into confidence?” Raja said.
Underscoring the importance of democratic institutions, he added:
“India is a democracy, and Parliament should not be made redundant. Why is the PM not telling Parliament what role Trump or the US played in the matter?”
Raja also criticized the government’s communication on the issue.
“I have no comment on what the Foreign Secretary has said. But there are unanswered questions. Why can’t the PM come forward and explain what exactly took place in his talks with President Trump?”
His remarks follow Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s briefing that Prime Minister Modi had a phone conversation with then-US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada. Misri clarified that during the half-hour-long call, Modi informed Trump about Operation Sindoor and reiterated India’s long-standing policy of not accepting any third-party mediation in its disputes with Pakistan.
“Prime Minister Modi made it clear that no discussions took place on mediation or the India-US trade deal during this episode,” Misri said.
He further noted that the ceasefire was a result of direct communication between the Indian and Pakistani militaries, initiated at Pakistan’s request.
“India has never accepted, does not accept, and will never accept mediation. There is complete political unanimity in India on this issue,” Misri added.
The clarification came after repeated claims from former US President Trump that he had used trade negotiations to facilitate peace between India and Pakistan.
Misri said Trump understood Modi’s position and expressed support for India’s stand against terrorism.
