NEW DELHI – President Droupadi Murmu gave CP Radhakrishnan the Oath of Office on Friday at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This made him the 15th Vice President of India. A lot of important people, such parliamentarians and high-ranking government officials, were there. This was a big change in the country’s political environment.
Radhakrishnan, a long-time member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won the election on Tuesday with 452 votes. His opponent from the INDIA group, B. Sudershan Reddy, got 300 votes. His win came just a few weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar, his predecessor, stepped down for health reasons.
Radhakrishnan had a number of important governor positions before he became Vice President. From July 2024 to September 2025, he was the Governor of Maharashtra. From February 2023 to July 2024, he was the Governor of Jharkhand. In 2024, he was also briefly the Governor of Telangana and the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. He was a Member of Parliament from Coimbatore in 1998 and 1999. He has decades of experience in politics and administration that he would bring to the new job.
What the Vice President of India Does
The Vice President’s office is the second-highest constitutional position in India. Its two main jobs are:
Ex-officio The Vice President is in charge of the Rajya Sabha, which is the upper house of India’s Parliament. They keep order and run the business of the house.
If the President dies, resigns, is removed, or is otherwise unable to do their job, the vice president takes over as acting president for up to six months until a new President can be elected.
Radhakrishnan will be in charge of running the Rajya Sabha and making sure that the legislative process goes well as vice president and chairman.
