Indore (Madhya Pradesh) [India], January 27: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, sharply criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing them of working against the Indian Constitution and seeking to dismantle it.
Gandhi was speaking at a public gathering in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, the birthplace of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, where he emphasized that the Constitution is more than just a document—it represents the centuries-old wisdom of India.
“A battle of ideologies is taking place in India. On one side, there is the Congress party, which believes in and has fought for the Constitution. On the other side, the RSS and BJP are against the Constitution created by Dr. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. They aim to weaken and eventually dismantle it,” Gandhi said. “The Indian Constitution is not just a book; it carries the voice and thoughts of India’s great leaders.”
He also targeted RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, alleging that Bhagwat had rejected India’s independence on August 15, 1947, claiming that true freedom was only achieved after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power. “Mohan Bhagwat recently stated that India did not gain true freedom on August 15, 1947, and that real freedom only came after Modi became Prime Minister. This is a direct attack on the Constitution,” Gandhi said. He further noted that the BJP had even discussed repealing the Constitution if they secured a significant majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a claim he called alarming.
Gandhi warned, “If the Constitution is abolished, the poor, Dalits, Adivasis, and OBCs will lose everything. This is their goal.”
He also criticized the concentration of wealth among a few billionaires, such as Adani and Ambani, accusing the government of serving the interests of the wealthy while neglecting the needs of the common people. “Where does the Constitution say that the wealth of India should be handed over to Adani and Ambani?” he asked, highlighting the rising unemployment rate in the country. “The Constitution guarantees equality for all citizens, yet today India faces its highest unemployment rate in 50 years. While billionaires amass vast fortunes, common people are forced into debt to cover basic expenses like marriages due to lack of jobs.”
Gandhi further slammed the economic policies of the government, including demonetization and the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which he claimed were tools to eliminate India’s poor. “GST burdens everyone equally, yet billionaires like Adani and Ambani benefit, selling Chinese goods in India and depriving our children of jobs,” he argued. He also criticized loan waivers given to billionaires, pointing out that common people’s debts, such as those of farmers and students, were never waived.
The Congress leader went on to accuse the wealthy elite of destroying the country’s employment system. “The privatization of education and healthcare by billionaires has turned the education system into a mere certification process. Despite paying huge sums for degrees, millions of students have no employment opportunities. If even IIT and IIM graduates can’t find jobs, how can the rest of you expect to?” he said.
Gandhi’s remarks were made during Congress’ massive ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ rally at Dr. Ambedkar’s birthplace in Mhow. The event was attended by several prominent Congress leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Both Kharge and Gandhi also visited the Bhim Janmabhoomi Smarak and paid floral tributes to Dr. Ambedkar.
