Congress Questions ECI’s Voter Enrollment In Maharashtra Amid CEC’s Claims Of Robust Process

After Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar dismissed allegations of discrepancies in voter addition and deletion, the Congress party raised concerns over the voter enrollment process in Maharashtra, alleging irregularities.

In a letter on Wednesday, the Congress questioned how the total number of eligible voters in Maharashtra surpassed the estimated adult population, as per a government report.

Allegations of Over-Enrollment

The Congress highlighted a sudden increase of nearly 50 lakh new voters in just four months for the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha elections. The party pointed out that, according to the National Commission on Population’s November 2019 report, Maharashtra’s estimated adult population for 2024 is 9.54 crore. However, the Election Commission’s data shows 9.70 crore enrolled voters, exceeding the adult population by 16 lakh.

“On average, only 90% of the eligible population is typically enrolled as electors. How is it that Maharashtra has 100% or more?” the Congress asked. The party also cited Aadhaar enrollment data to support its claims.

Doubts on CEC’s Robust Process

The Congress criticized the CEC’s assertion that the voter addition process is “tight-proof and robust.” The party stated that this single data point undermines the credibility of the process.

“Just this one simple data point quashes the CEC’s claim that the process of voter addition and deletion is very robust and unquestionable,” the Congress said, while adding that earlier questions raised in their December 10 letter remain unanswered.

CEC’s Defense

CEC Rajiv Kumar, in a press conference on Tuesday, defended the electoral roll process, emphasizing that no voter deletion occurs without proper procedures, including Form 7 submissions. He stated that claims and objections are shared with political parties and that the process involves approximately 70 steps to ensure transparency.

Delhi Assembly Elections Announced

Meanwhile, the Election Commission announced that voting for the Delhi Assembly Elections will take place on February 5, with counting scheduled for February 8.

This exchange has intensified the debate on voter enrollment and the credibility of the electoral process as India prepares for upcoming elections.
