Congress to Launch ‘Save Constitution’ Campaign from April 25

Nationwide initiative to focus on social justice, caste census, MSP guarantees, and countering BJP’s “disinformation” on National Herald; campaign to run till May 30 with pressers, rallies, and door-to-door outreach.

New Delhi, April 20: The Indian National Congress on Saturday announced a large-scale ‘Save Constitution’ (Samvidhan Bachao) campaign that will run nationwide from April 25 to May 30. The campaign aims to mobilize public support for constitutional rights, social justice, and economic equity, while also countering what the party calls “political vendetta” and “disinformation” spread by the ruling BJP, particularly regarding the National Herald case.

The decision was taken during a high-level strategy meeting chaired by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and attended by general secretaries, state in-charges, and heads of frontal organisations in New Delhi.

🗓️ Campaign Rollout Timeline:

  • April 25–30: ‘Save Constitution’ rallies at state-level (PCC units)
  • May 3–10: District-level rallies across the country
  • May 11–17: Campaign extended to over 4,500 assembly constituencies
  • May 20–30: Door-to-door outreach and grassroots mobilization

🛑 “BJP Using ED as Political Weapon”

Addressing the media post-meeting, Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary (Communications), strongly criticized the BJP government for allegedly misusing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to target Congress leaders under false pretenses in the National Herald case.

“This is not a legal issue—it reeks of political vendetta, intimidation, and fear-mongering by two individuals with a criminal mindset,” said Ramesh.

He added that Congress leaders will hold press conferences in multiple cities from April 21 to April 24 to counter the BJP’s narrative on the National Herald issue.

🗳️ Focus Areas of the Campaign:

As per the Ahmedabad AICC resolution, the campaign will focus on:

  1. Social and Political Justice:
    • Nationwide caste census
    • Reservation for SC/ST/OBC students in private educational institutions
    • Removing the 50% cap on reservations
  2. Economic Justice:
    • Legal guarantees for MSP, based on the Swaminathan formula
    • Debt waiver for farmers
    • Revival of MSMEs, affected by massive Chinese imports
  3. Organisational Strengthening:
    • Empowerment of District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents
    • New appointment mechanism with five-member observer panels (4 PCC, 1 AICC)
    • Gujarat’s DCC appointments to be completed by May 31

🧭 Congress’ Broader Strategy

The campaign signals a coordinated attempt by the Congress to reclaim its constitutional narrative, sharpen its anti-BJP positioning, and build momentum ahead of the 2024 General Elections and state polls.

“Our party stands for the Constitution, for justice, and for the rights of the underprivileged. This campaign is about reaching every corner of the country to remind people what is at stake,” said a senior party leader.
