Congress Slams PM Modi For ‘Compromising Honour’ After Trump’s Claims On India-Pakistan Conflict

New Delhi [India], July 19: The Congress Party on Saturday sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning his silence in the face of repeated claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that he stopped a potential India-Pakistan war by using trade threats.

In a post on social media platform X, Congress wrote:

“Trump said, five jets were shot down in the war between India and Pakistan. Along with this, he said for the 24th time that ‘I stopped the India-Pakistan war by threatening trade.’
Trump is constantly repeating this, and Narendra Modi is silent. Why did Narendra Modi compromise the country’s honour for trade?”

The statement came after President Trump, while speaking at a public event, reiterated his role in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. He claimed he halted the confrontation—allegedly involving the downing of five fighter jets—by pressuring both sides with the threat of stalling trade talks.

“India and Pakistan were going at it, and it was getting bigger. We said, you want a trade deal? We’re not making one if you’re throwing around weapons and maybe nuclear weapons,” Trump said.

He also referenced the Pahalgam terror attack as part of the timeline leading up to the crisis, adding that a nuclear war was “just a week away” before his intervention.

“It would have been a nuclear war within another week, the way that was going,” Trump told NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte earlier this week.

This is not the first time Trump has made such claims. In June, he told reporters on Air Force One that he had resolved a “potential nuclear problem” between the two nations, though no official confirmation or public acknowledgement has ever come from the Indian government.

Despite the frequency of Trump’s remarks, PM Modi has remained silent, prompting the Congress to accuse him of diplomatic weakness and compromising national dignity in exchange for trade benefits.
