Congress Protests Against US Tariffs, Calls For Urgent Discussion In Parliament

New Delhi [India], April 4: Congress MPs staged a protest on Friday against the central government following the United States’ decision to impose a 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods.

The demonstration took place near the Makar Dwar within the Parliament premises, as Congress leaders voiced their concerns over the impact of these tariffs on the Indian economy.

Earlier in the day, Congress MP Manish Tewari submitted a notice to move an adjournment motion, seeking a debate on the “deteriorating” diplomatic relations between India and the United States. He highlighted recent visa revocations affecting Indian students and the imposition of tariffs as key issues requiring urgent discussion.

Tewari argued that the recent US actions have raised serious concerns regarding the treatment of Indian interests in bilateral relations. He pointed out that a large number of Indian students have faced abrupt visa cancellations, causing financial distress and uncertainty, with no transparent grievance redressal mechanism in place. Many of these students have taken educational loans for their studies, making the situation even more critical.

Congress MP Manickram Tagore also submitted a notice for an adjournment motion, emphasizing how the newly imposed US tariffs are adversely affecting Indian exports, imports, and the livelihoods of farmers, businesses, and MSMEs. His motion urged the government to clarify its strategy to protect Indian industries and engage with the US to mitigate economic damage.

Similarly, Congress MP and Lok Sabha Deputy Leader of Opposition Gaurav Gogoi called for a discussion on the “urgent and pressing” issue, warning of severe economic consequences.

On Thursday, Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticized the US decision, stating that the 26% reciprocal tariff would have devastating effects on India’s economy, particularly on the auto, pharmaceutical, and agriculture sectors. He questioned the government’s response to the situation, demanding immediate action.

US President Donald Trump announced the new import tariffs on Wednesday, outlining increased duties on multiple countries, including a 26% tariff on Indian exports.
