Congress MP Vijay Vasanth Moves Adjournment Motion In Lok Sabha On GST Removal For Agriculture And Essential Food Items

New Delhi [India]: On Monday, Congress MP Vijayakumar alias Vijay Vasanth raised a notice of adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, urging a discussion on the removal of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on agricultural products and essential food items. He highlighted the urgent nature of this issue, emphasizing its significance for both farmers and the common people of India.

In his motion, Vijay Vasanth stated, “I hereby give notice of my intention to ask for leave to move a motion for the adjournment of the business of the house for the purpose of discussing a definite matter of urgent importance. Hon’ble Speaker Sir, I rise to move an adjournment motion to discuss the pressing issue of the removal of GST on agricultural products and essential food items, which is a matter of great concern for both our farmers and the common people of the nation.”

Call for GST Removal on Agricultural Products and Food Essentials

The Congress MP further emphasized the need for GST exemption on agricultural products, including farming equipment and inputs, stating that this would alleviate the financial burden on farmers, who are currently grappling with high production costs. “The removal of GST would reduce their financial burden, lower input costs, and help boost agricultural production. This is crucial at a time when our farmers are facing challenges due to unpredictable weather patterns, inflationary pressures, and increasing input costs,” Vasanth said.

Additionally, the Congress leader demanded that the GST be removed from staple food items such as Atta, Maida, Suji, Besan, and other essential food products. These items are a core part of daily diets for millions of Indians, and the tax impacts the cost of living for many families, especially economically vulnerable ones. He argued that removing GST on these products would provide much-needed relief to the public.

Focus on Agricultural Welfare and Increased Investment

Vasanth also advocated for increased allocation to critical agricultural initiatives, including the Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, irrigation projects, and agricultural research. “These programs play a vital role in improving the welfare of our farmers, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The government must prioritize these areas to improve the livelihoods of farmers and enhance the overall productivity of the agricultural sector,” he stressed.

A Holistic Approach to Addressing Farmers’ Concerns

The Congress leader urged the government to adopt a comprehensive approach to address the concerns of both farmers and the public. “The steps I have outlined today are crucial for ensuring the prosperity of our agricultural sector and the well-being of the people of India. I hope the government will take immediate and necessary action to address these issues,” Vasanth concluded.

The winter session of Parliament began on November 25 and will continue until December 20, with frequent disruptions and adjournments in both Houses.
