Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi Calls For Investigation Into Currency Notes Found On His Seat

New Delhi [India]: Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi responded to the discovery of a wad of currency notes on his designated seat in the Rajya Sabha, calling for a thorough investigation into what he described as a significant security lapse. Singhvi expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing the need to understand how the money ended up on his seat—whether as an intentional act or by mistake.

Speaking about the matter, Singhvi remarked, “If this situation weren’t so serious, it would be laughable. Politicizing every issue and engaging in baseless accusations only tarnishes the image of our entire system. This incident demands answers.”

Proposed Security Enhancements for MPs

The Congress MP humorously suggested enhanced security measures for parliamentary seating:

  • Glass Enclosures: He proposed creating lockable glass boxes for MPs’ seats to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Barbed Wire Fencing: Singhvi also suggested implementing fencing around seats to ensure their security during the absence of MPs.

“Anyone could place money, or worse, illegal items like contraband, on a seat when the MP is away. This is a matter of serious concern and must be addressed immediately,” Singhvi stated.

Congress Party’s Response

Congress leaders have alleged that the recovery of cash from Singhvi’s seat is a deliberate attempt to divert attention from the ongoing controversies surrounding the Adani Group.

Party sources clarified that carrying a sum of ₹50,000 in cash is not illegal. They also revealed that Congress leaders have approached Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to request a comprehensive investigation, potentially by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) or another suitable agency.

Chairman’s Statement and Investigation

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar informed the House about the discovery of the cash, which was found during a routine anti-sabotage check conducted after the adjournment of the session on December 5.

“The currency was discovered on seat number 222, allocated to Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Upon being informed, I ensured that an investigation was initiated. The matter is currently under scrutiny,” Dhankhar stated.

Political Implications

This incident has sparked controversy, with opposition parties suggesting ulterior motives behind the recovery. The Congress has asserted that it is a distraction tactic, while government supporters insist on a transparent probe to uphold parliamentary integrity.

The outcome of the investigation is awaited, with both sides watching closely as the incident unfolds amidst an already heated parliamentary session.
