Congress Moves Adjournment And Suspension Notices In Parliament Over Pahalgam Attack, Operation Sindoor, and Trump’s Ceasefire Claims

New Delhi [India], July 21: On the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Congress party intensified its pressure on the Centre, moving formal notices in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha to force a discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and controversial claims made by former US President Donald Trump.

🔴 Adjournment Motion in Lok Sabha

Congress MP Manickam Tagore, who serves as the party’s whip in the Lok Sabha, submitted an adjournment motion notice to Speaker Om Birla, highlighting what he called “grave lapses in internal security” and demanding immediate discussion.

“The horrific terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians has shaken the conscience of the nation… The attack exposes serious intelligence and security failures,” Tagore stated in the notice.

He also raised concerns about:

  • The diplomatic aftermath of Operation Sindoor.
  • Trump’s repeated public claims (24 times, most recently on July 19) that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan using trade leverage.
  • Trump’s assertion that five Indian fighter jets were shot down, which has not been addressed publicly by the Indian government.

Tagore alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the matter has “diminished India’s diplomatic standing” and demanded Parliament be prioritized over all other legislative business to address the issue.

🔴 Suspension of Business Motion in Rajya Sabha

Simultaneously, Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala submitted a Suspension of Business notice under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha. The motion seeks to suspend Zero Hour, Question Hour, and other routine business on July 21, to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s subsequent response via Operation Sindoor.

“The tragic loss of life, foreign policy fallout, and questions over transparency in military disclosures warrant immediate attention in the House,” Surjewala wrote.

🔴 Opposition Strategy and Broader Context

The INDIA bloc has already announced that it will use the Monsoon Session to target the Modi government on several fronts, including:

  • The Pahalgam attack and cross-border terrorism.
  • Operation Sindoor and foreign policy consequences.
  • Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
  • The Air India AI-171 crash and civil aviation safety.

Congress and its allies have expressed concern that sensitive disclosures—such as statements made by the Chief of Defence Staff on foreign soil—bypassed Parliament, raising questions about the government’s accountability mechanisms.

🗓️ Session Schedule

The Monsoon Session will run from July 21 to August 21, with a break scheduled between August 12 and 18. A total of 21 sittings across 32 days are expected, during which both legislative business and political confrontations will dominate proceedings.

This marks a tense opening to what is expected to be a contentious session, as the opposition seeks explanations on major security and diplomatic developments while the government looks to push its legislative agenda forward.
