Congress Launches ‘Vote Chori Se Azaadi’ Campaign

The Indian National Congress (INC) has launched a new campaign, “Vote Chori se Azaadi” (Freedom from Vote Theft), in support of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s allegations against the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the BJP.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Congress party urged people to change their social media display pictures to show their support for the initiative. “On the occasion of Independence Day, join the campaign for freedom from ‘vote theft’,” the post said.

The campaign follows Gandhi’s announcement on August 14 of a “VoterAdhikarYatra” (Voter Rights March), which is set to begin on August 17 in Bihar ahead of the state’s Assembly elections. He has called on people to join this “people’s movement.”

In his announcement, Gandhi stated that this is not just an election issue but “a decisive battle to protect democracy, the constitution, and the principle of ‘one man, one vote’.” He vowed to “ensure a clean voter list across the entire country.”

On August 7, Gandhi had slammed the ECI, alleging that elections are “choreographed.” He presented what he claimed was research on voting in the Mahadevapura Assembly in Karnataka, alleging the theft of 1,00,250 votes. Gandhi stated that while the Congress party won other seats, the BJP swept Mahadevapura, which ultimately led to their victory in the Lok Sabha election.
