The Indian National Congress has voiced “deep concern” over the alleged atmosphere of insecurity faced by religious minorities in Bangladesh, following the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a religious leader and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote.
Congress Calls for Action
In a statement, Congress leader and AICC Chairman of Media and Publicity, Pawan Khera, urged the Indian government to press Bangladesh to ensure the safety of its minority communities.
“The Indian National Congress expresses its deep concern at the atmosphere of insecurity being faced by religious minorities in Bangladesh. The arrest of the ISKCON monk is the latest example. The Indian National Congress expects the Government of India to prevail upon the Bangladesh government to take necessary steps and ensure the security of life and property of minorities in the country,” Khera said.
Background on the Arrest
Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested on Monday at Dhaka airport and later presented before the Chittagong Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. Despite his lawyers filing a bail petition, it was rejected, and he was sent to jail.
The case against Brahmachari alleges sedition, citing his actions related to raising a flag on a stand displaying Bangladesh’s national flag. However, reports indicate that the complainant has expressed unwillingness to pursue the case.
MEA Responds to Arrest
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed its concern over the incident and called on Bangladesh to ensure the safety of Hindus and other minorities.
“We have noted with deep concern the arrest and denial of bail to Shri Chinmoy Krishna Das, who is also the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote. This incident follows multiple attacks on Hindus and other minorities by extremist elements in Bangladesh. There are several documented cases of arson, looting, theft, and desecration of deities and temples,” the MEA stated.
Bangladesh’s Response
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to maintaining religious harmony in the country.
“Bangladesh’s government is firm to uphold religious harmony in Bangladesh, irrespective of religious affiliation, and uphold the rule of law for every Bangladeshi, without distinction, under the laws of the land,” read the official statement.
Context of Rising Tensions
The arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das adds to concerns over the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh, amid reports of attacks on minority communities and their places of worship. Opposition and advocacy groups have called for stronger international scrutiny to safeguard the rights of religious minorities in the country.
