Congress Delegation To Visit Violence-Hit Sambhal Amid Tensions Over Mosque Survey

A Congress delegation led by Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai is set to visit Sambhal on Monday, following the November 24 stone-pelting incident linked to a contentious court-ordered survey of the Shahi Masjid.

Ajay Rai outlined the delegation’s intentions, emphasizing a peaceful approach inspired by Gandhian principles. “We are determined to visit Sambhal despite the challenges. Our purpose is to stand against the atrocities and injustice that occurred there, where people were beaten and even shot in the head. The government’s fear of being exposed is evident,” he told media.

Rai and other Congress leaders stayed overnight at the party office in Lucknow to strategize. They plan to leave for Sambhal at 10:30 AM on Monday.

Background of the Incident:

The tensions in Sambhal stem from a local court’s November 19 order to survey the Shahi Masjid following claims that the mosque was originally a Harihar temple. The survey sparked clashes between protesters and police, resulting in four deaths.

On November 30, a Samajwadi Party (SP) delegation was also barred from visiting the district. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav criticized the administration, alleging that its actions were dictated by the government. “We support peace and justice, but the administration must ensure impartiality and fairness,” Yadav remarked.

Judicial Inspection and Security Measures:

On Sunday, a three-member judicial committee inspected the Shahi Masjid area, engaging with residents and officials to gather information. The team was accompanied by heavy security to ensure their safety during the visit.

The Uttar Pradesh administration remains vigilant, with tensions still high in Sambhal. The situation highlights the growing sensitivities around historical claims involving religious sites, which have sparked legal and social conflicts in recent years.

Political Implications:

The Sambhal incident has become a flashpoint for opposition parties like Congress and SP, which have accused the ruling government of suppressing dissent and failing to ensure justice. The Congress visit aims to draw attention to these issues, potentially adding to the political discourse ahead of upcoming elections.
