James Comey Questioned By Secret Service Over Cryptic “8647” Post Amid Trump Threat Concerns

Washington: Former FBI Director James Comey was questioned by the U.S. Secret Service on Friday following a now-deleted social media post that featured the number “8647” spelled out with seashells, a sequence some interpreted as a threat toward former President Donald Trump, reported The Hill.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the interview, describing the post as under investigation and emphasizing her commitment to Trump’s safety.

“I will continue to take all measures necessary to ensure the protection of (Trump)… This is an ongoing investigation,” Noem posted on X.

While Comey voluntarily met with agents at the Secret Service’s Washington Field Office, according to CNN, he denied any malicious intent, saying he was unaware the numbers could be seen as violent or threatening.

Why “8647” Raised Alarm

  • The number “86” is commonly understood in American slang to mean “eliminate” or “get rid of.”
  • The number “47” is significant as Trump aims to become the 47th U.S. President if re-elected in 2024.
  • Critics, including Trump and Republican allies, interpreted “8647” as a veiled threat or coded call for assassination.

Trump, speaking to Fox News, responded: “He knew exactly what that meant.”

Security and Legal Response

The Secret Service released a statement emphasizing the seriousness of any rhetoric that may imply threats against protectees:

“We are aware of the social media posts by the former FBI director, and we take rhetoric like this very seriously. We do not comment further on protective intelligence matters.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) declined to add further details, referring back to the Secret Service’s position.

This case is unfolding amid heightened political tension in the U.S., with Trump being a central figure in the upcoming elections and past targets of assassination attempts.
