Mumbai (Maharashtra), April 3: Shiv Sena Yuva Sena General Secretary Rahool Kanal has urged stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra to cooperate with the ongoing investigation regarding his satirical remarks about Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde in his stand-up video, “Naya Bharat.”
Rahool Kanal’s Statement on the Investigation
Speaking to ANI, Kanal stated:
“Bail is a right for every citizen. I would request Kunal Kamra to be a part of the investigation and present the facts as a responsible citizen. We will present our facts, and whatever is right as per the law will take its own course.”
Call for a Ban on Kamra’s Shows
Earlier, Kanal formally wrote to BookMyShow, urging the platform to stop selling tickets for Kamra’s upcoming stand-up performances. In a letter dated April 2, Kanal expressed concerns that Kamra’s content could provoke public mischief and disrupt social harmony, particularly in a diverse city like Mumbai.
Legal Complaints & Financial Investigation
Kamra is now facing multiple legal challenges, including:
- A complaint with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police, alleging he received foreign funds through his satirical videos, raising questions about the sources of his income.
- Three FIRs registered at Khar Police Station, based on complaints from Jalgaon’s Mayor, a hotelier, and a Nashik businessman.
- Accusations that his “gaddar” (traitor) joke about Eknath Shinde was offensive and defamatory.
Madras High Court Grants Kamra Interim Bail
In response to these legal troubles, Kamra approached the Madras High Court for transit anticipatory bail, citing threats following his comments. The court granted interim protection until April 7, imposing certain conditions on him.
This case has sparked debates over freedom of speech vs. legal accountability, as Kamra continues to defend his stand-up content as satire and artistic expression.
