New Delhi: Indian javelin thrower Sachin Yadav has emerged as a new sensation on the global stage, earning high praise and comparisons to reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem after his impressive performance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
In what was his debut at the World Championships on Thursday, the 25-year-old was a dark horse but quickly made a name for himself. He stunned the athletics world by finishing fourth, surpassing seasoned competitors like Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Nadeem, and Julian Weber. While Chopra and Nadeem finished eighth and tenth, respectively, Weber had to settle for fifth.
Yadav appeared unfazed by the pressure of the big stage, even holding a spot in the top three at one point. He set a new personal best of 86.27m with his very first throw, building on his previous best of 85.16m, which won him a silver medal at the Asian Athletics Championships. He also recorded throws of 84.90m, 85.96m, and 80.95m during the final.
A Coach Sees World-Class Potential
Michael Musselmann, a Peruvian coach who has been advising Sachin Yadav since the athlete was 21, believes Yadav has “tremendous potential.” In an interview with IndiaToday.in, Musselmann drew a direct comparison between Yadav and Nadeem, particularly in their throwing technique.
“Sachin has the best arm speed in the world, much like Nadeem,” Musselmann said. “Nadeem is not athletic, he is not very powerful. But, he has the best block, and his arm is from another world (arm speed). This is why he was able to throw 93m last year. Nadeem doesn’t lift big weights. He was a cricketer. Sachin was also bowling fast. You can make that connection.”
Musselmann further elaborated that if Sachin can improve his body composition and run-up speed while matching Nadeem’s “block” technique and Julian Weber’s athleticism, he could easily throw 95m. “I am not joking!” the coach added, highlighting his confidence in the young Indian’s talent.
