In response to the consistently hazardous air quality in the national capital, the Delhi government has announced the formation of a high-level panel, to be led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, dedicated to monitoring and combating pollution levels.
The decision comes as Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) remained firmly in the ‘Very Poor’ category for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, recording an average AQI of 333 at 5:30 pm, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Hotspots like Nehru Nagar recorded an even higher reading of 388.
High-Powered Monitoring Panel
The newly established panel is designed to centralize and coordinate the government’s efforts against air pollution. Its composition will include:
- Ministers from the Delhi Cabinet.
- Representatives from relevant government departments.
- Leading experts and scientists specializing in environmental and air quality management.
The Chief Minister’s direct leadership of the panel underscores the seriousness with which the government is addressing the public health crisis.
Mandatory Penalties for Violations
Simultaneously, the government has issued stringent directions to all departments to ensure strict enforcement of environmental regulations.
All government, private agencies, and individuals found in violation of pollution-related norms must now face immediate penalties. This aggressive enforcement drive aims to deter activities that contribute to the capital’s deteriorating air quality, particularly during the critical winter months when air pollution typically peaks.
The concerted action—combining high-level monitoring with mandatory enforcement—is the Delhi government’s latest effort to bring relief to residents battling the toxic smog.
