In response to the soaring demand for the recently launched Vande Bharat Express service between Katra and Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has formally urged the Union Ministry of Railways to introduce additional train services on this high-demand route.
During his visit to Katra, CM Omar told the media that the inaugural Vande Bharat service has been running at full capacity since its launch, demonstrating a strong public desire for improved, faster connectivity between the Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley.
“The Vande Bharat service has brought immense relief to commuters and boosted regional connectivity. However, the current capacity is not enough to meet the ever-increasing demand. I have requested the Centre to increase the train frequency and introduce more services to cater to the growing passenger load,” CM Omar stated.
He highlighted that better rail connectivity will ease travel for both locals and pilgrims heading to Katra’s revered Maa Vaishno Devi shrine, while also acting as a catalyst for tourism and economic development across the Union Territory.
The newly launched Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, flagged off earlier this month, has reportedly reduced travel time significantly and offers a modern, comfortable travel experience. Rail authorities confirm that bookings for the train are completely filled for the next 10 days, underscoring the urgent need for expanded services.
CM Omar reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving public infrastructure and services across J&K, promising that “all possible steps will be taken to enhance connectivity and unlock the region’s economic potential.”
In a recent show of support, National Conference Chief Farooq Abdullah travelled aboard the Vande Bharat Express, visiting the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra. After his visit, he expressed satisfaction with the journey and offered prayers for “peace, prosperity, and brotherhood” in the region.
The state government and railway authorities are now expected to review the feasibility of adding more Vande Bharat services on the route to meet the enthusiastic public response.
