Visakhapatnam, : A tragic incident during the Chandanotsavam festival at the Sri Varahalakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple in Visakhapatnam claimed the lives of seven devotees, after a 20-foot-long wall collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday amid heavy rainfall. The accident occurred around 2:30 a.m., while devotees had gathered in large numbers to participate in the sacred annual event.
CM Naidu Reacts, Orders Relief Measures
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and issued directives to support the injured. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Naidu stated:
“I am deeply saddened by the death of seven devotees due to the collapse of a wall during the Chandanotsavam of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy. My deepest condolences to the families of those who died in this incident due to heavy rains.”

Investigation Underway
Vinay Chan, Principal Secretary of the Endowment Department, emphasized that the exact cause of the collapse is under investigation but pointed to early morning rains as a possible factor:
“Prima facie, we have noticed a downpour between 2:30 and 3:30 am. It is not appropriate to conclude the cause yet. All the debris has been cleared and rescue work has been completed,” he told media.
Relief and Rescue
State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were immediately deployed to the site. Four others were injured in the incident and are currently receiving medical care.
Andhra Pradesh Home and Disaster Management Minister Anitha Vangalapudi, who visited the site, called it an “unfortunate incident” and assured necessary measures were being taken.
Festival Turns Tragic
Chandanotsavam is a major annual celebration at the Simhachalam temple, attracting thousands of devotees from across the state. This year, heavy overnight rains appear to have compromised the temporary structure, turning celebration into catastrophe.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are expected to announce further compensation and safety review protocols in coming days.
