New Delhi [India]: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday emphasized the importance of cooperation between the ruling party and the opposition for the city’s development during the Delhi Legislative Assembly Orientation Program.
“The responsibility given to us by the public of Delhi is a big thing. They have bestowed their faith in us. Every second here is important. It should be our priority to respect this house,” CM Gupta said.
She stressed the need for productive discussions and peaceful functioning of the Assembly, adding:
“Our only goal is the progress of Delhi. The atmosphere which is cordial today should remain the same in the next five years. Both the ruling party and the opposition are necessary for the path of development.”
Earlier in the day, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the two-day Orientation Programme for newly elected MLAs.
Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta encouraged new members to thoroughly understand legislative rules and procedures:
“New members must read the rule book of the House, especially the code of conduct for members. Follow these rules during the proceedings. Keep in mind that the Speaker’s permission is necessary before speaking in the House.”
Quoting former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Gupta added:
“Governments will come and go, but the country and democracy should remain.”
Delhi Leader of Opposition Atishi highlighted the responsibility MLAs hold as public representatives:
“Sitting in this House is not just a matter of dignity; it is also a big responsibility. We are sitting here not as representatives of any party but as representatives of the people.”

The Delhi Assembly’s Budget session is scheduled for March 24 to 28, with the Budget presentation on March 25.
