Washington [US], May 21 – Actor Christopher McDonald has officially joined the cast of Happy Gilmore 2, the long-awaited sequel to the beloved 1996 sports comedy. Speaking at the New York premiere of Fountain of Youth, McDonald shared his excitement, saying he was “over the moon” to be part of the project once again, according to People.
Directed by Kyle Newacheck and co-written by Tim Herlihy and Adam Sandler, Happy Gilmore 2 is set to debut on Netflix on July 25. The sequel sees Sandler reprise his iconic role as the hockey player-turned-golfer, nearly 30 years after the original film first became a cult classic.
Returning alongside Sandler are Julie Bowen, Dennis Dugan, Ben Stiller, and McDonald himself, who once again plays the infamous rival Shooter McGavin. While plot details remain under wraps, with McDonald citing a non-disclosure agreement, he praised the production team and the direction the sequel is taking.
“I’ve been an ambassador for this movie for so long—29 years later,” McDonald said. “They’ve outdone themselves,” he added, referring to Sandler and distributor Netflix.
The sequel also welcomes newcomers like NFL star Travis Kelce and global music sensation Bad Bunny, adding fresh faces to the classic ensemble.
“Happy Gilmore 2 is about family, friends, love, and heart—everything I admire about Adam Sandler’s work,” McDonald noted. “He has so much love for people, and he’s done some amazing work in recent years. I’m very happy for him.”
Fans can catch the highly anticipated sequel exclusively on Netflix starting July 25.
