Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson have officially ended their engagement, with reports indicating that the split may have stemmed from the Coldplay frontman’s controlling and clingy behaviour. The couple, who had kept much of their relationship out of the public eye, reportedly called it quits earlier this month — and insiders say it wasn’t exactly amicable.
According to a report by RadarOnline, Fifty Shades of Grey star Johnson ended the relationship after feeling emotionally overwhelmed by Martin’s intense neediness.
“Dakota loved Chris. She still does, but he became way too controlling and dependent on her in the end,” a source revealed. “It became suffocating and unbearable to live with. If she went away or wasn’t answering his calls for any length of time, he’d fly off the handle – even when they were in the same city.”
The source went on to describe Martin as “a sourpuss” who disapproved of Johnson’s social life and preferred a more reclusive lifestyle.
Concerns about the relationship were reportedly raised by Johnson’s friends earlier this year. In April, they voiced worries that the reserved musician was holding the actress back from growing professionally by discouraging her from mingling with key Hollywood insiders.
“Dakota is getting her groove back now and reconnecting with old friends – many of whom Chris wouldn’t tolerate,” the insider shared. “They’re cheering this split from the rooftops and are so glad to have her back.”
Despite the firm stance, those close to Johnson fear she may still harbour lingering feelings for Martin.
“The only worry among her friends is the idea that she may eventually take him back,” the source added. “But Dakota is swearing up and down that it’s for good this time – mainly because she can’t stomach being with a guy who won’t allow her basic liberty.”
For now, Johnson seems to be embracing her independence, while Martin reportedly deals with heartbreak — leaving fans to wonder if this truly marks the end of their high-profile romance.
