China Reports Labour Day Tourism Boom Amid Public Skepticism and Economic Strain

Beijing [China] : China reported a strong surge in tourist travel and consumer spending during the five-day Labour Day holiday, but skepticism is growing among citizens who point to a disconnect between official data and the economic realities on the ground, according to a report by Radio Free Asia (RFA).

Figures from the Ministry of Transport claimed that average daily cross-regional passenger traffic hit 293 million trips — an 8% increase from last year. Revenue from the retail and dining sectors was also said to have grown by 6.3%. However, these numbers have been met with doubt by many Chinese social media users, who highlight empty shopping streets, rising prices, and a general decline in spending enthusiasm.

Contrary to state media’s narrative of a vibrant consumer boom, many citizens reported a subdued holiday atmosphere. “It was quite empty, and there weren’t many people around,” said Zhang, a Wuhan resident, describing his visit to the Wangfujing shopping center on Zhongshan Avenue. “Prices have increased; even the cost of medication has gone up.”

The sentiment online echoes similar concerns, with many netizens describing the holiday mood as “on break but broke” — reflecting the financial constraints especially felt by China’s middle- and lower-income groups.

Adding to the economic gloom, RFA previously reported that many export-reliant regions in southeastern China had begun scaling back operations. Numerous factories in provinces like Zhejiang declared extended holidays, cut production, and reduced wages due to declining foreign demand. Over half of the export firms in the region reportedly opted to remain closed beyond the Labour Day holiday, underscoring deeper challenges facing China’s industrial sector.

While the Chinese government continues to release upbeat economic data, the stark contrast with on-the-ground experiences suggests growing public unease and highlights the country’s ongoing struggle to sustain a post-pandemic recovery.
