Thousands of users across the United States reported issues with ChatGPT being unresponsive, slow, or completely inaccessible, according to data from the outage monitoring platform Down Detector.
HindustanTimes.com revealed that over 3,400 complaints were submitted by U.S. users, ranging from “failing to upload chat history” to extremely sluggish performance. Globally, 82% of users reported similar issues, with some encountering the error message: “Unable to load projects.”
The problem was so widespread that it led to significant disruptions, frustrating users who rely on ChatGPT for work, study, or communication.
Why is ChatGPT down?
OpenAI acknowledged the disruption through its system status page, stating:
“We’re currently experiencing issues. Elevated Error Rates on ChatGPT record mode, Sora and Codex. We have identified that users are experiencing elevated errors for the impacted services.”
The company added that it was actively working on a solution:
“We’re working on implementing a mitigation,” which essentially means engineers are scrambling to bring the services back online.
By early Wednesday morning, at 5:50 AM, OpenAI reported that the root cause had been identified. However, for many who spent Tuesday watching frozen screens, the key question remains: When will everything be fully functional again?
