ChatGPT is receiving another major personalisation upgrade. OpenAI on Friday announced the rollout of a new feature called “Characteristics”, allowing users to adjust specific personality traits of the chatbot such as warmth, enthusiasm, formatting style and emoji usage.
The new feature is part of ChatGPT’s Personalisation settings and builds on the existing eight preset personality modes. While earlier options focused on overall tone and voice, the Characteristics update gives users more granular control over how the AI communicates during everyday interactions.
What Is the ‘Characteristics’ Feature?
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI said users can now fine-tune traits like warmth, enthusiasm and emoji usage, helping them create a version of ChatGPT that best suits their communication style.
Importantly, OpenAI clarified that adjusting these traits does not affect ChatGPT’s intelligence, accuracy or capabilities. The changes only influence how responses are delivered, making the feature especially useful for casual conversations, learning, or personal use.
Where to Find the New Settings
Users can access the feature by:
- Opening the sidebar
- Going to Settings
- Selecting Personalisation
- Navigating to Characteristics
On mobile, the option can be found by tapping on the user’s profile name.
Four Customisable Characteristics
The new section includes four adjustable traits:
- Warm – Controls how friendly or professional responses sound
- Enthusiastic – Determines the energy and excitement in replies
- Headers & Lists – Adjusts how structured and formatted responses are
- Emoji – Changes how often emojis appear in replies
Each characteristic can be set to More, Default or Less. For example:
- Increasing Warmth makes responses more personable
- Reducing Enthusiasm keeps replies calm and neutral
- Emoji usage can be lowered, though there is currently no option to turn emojis off entirely
Personality Presets Still Available
For broader changes, users can still choose from eight preset styles under Base Style and Tone, including:
- Default
- Professional
- Friendly
- Candid
- Quirky
- Efficient
- Nerdy
- Cynical
The Characteristics feature works alongside these presets, offering deeper customisation without altering the chatbot’s core performance.
