Centre Approves 1.41 Lakh New Houses Under PMAY-U 2.0, Focus on Women and Senior Citizens

New Delhi: The central government has approved the construction of 1.41 lakh additional houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0, covering 14 states and union territories. With this, the total number of houses sanctioned under the revamped urban housing scheme has crossed 1 million units, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) announced on Thursday.

The approval came during the fifth meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), chaired by MoHUA Secretary Srinivas Katikithala in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Out of the 1,40,942 newly approved homes, 76,976 are reserved for women, including single, widowed, and separated beneficiaries. Additionally, 13,509 houses will be built for senior citizens, while seven units are earmarked for transgender persons.

Among social groups, 29,131 houses are allocated for Scheduled Castes (SC), 6,561 for Scheduled Tribes (ST), and 74,291 for Other Backward Classes (OBC).

With these latest approvals, PMAY-U 2.0 has now sanctioned 6.31 lakh houses for women — including over 70,000 for single or widowed females — along with 1.04 lakh units for senior citizens and 163 for transgender beneficiaries.

So far, the scheme has sanctioned around 2.2 lakh homes for SCs, 51,181 for STs, and 5.35 lakh for OBC households.

The newly approved projects span across Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

During the meeting, Katikithala urged states to ensure that housing projects are developed in areas with adequate infrastructure, connectivity, and public transport. He also encouraged loan fairs to help beneficiaries complete construction and called for improved geo-tagging and digital monitoring for faster implementation.

Launched in 2015, PMAY-U aims to provide pucca houses with essential amenities to the urban poor. The first phase of the mission has already delivered over 9.55 million homes. Revamped in September 2024, PMAY-U 2.0 targets another 10 million urban poor and middle-class families, offering financial assistance of up to ₹2.5 lakh per beneficiary.

Together, PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 have sanctioned over 12.2 million houses across India to date.
