The Hague A deepfake porn attack has hit Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, the 21-year-old heir to the Dutch throne. Websites that had films of her that had been digitally altered have since been taken down.
The Daily Beast says that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Dutch authorities worked together to shut down the websites, including MrDeepFakes, a big platform. The sites not only have deepfake porn of the princess, but also had about 70 other Dutch ladies. There have been no arrests in connection with the crime, even though the websites have been taken down.
Catharina-Amalia has been attacked like this before; similar videos of her were shared in 2022. The princess’s own schoolwork has made the recent event more newsworthy, though.
The princess wrote her bachelor’s thesis on the topic of deepfakes while studying Politics, Psychology, Law, and Economics (PPLE) at the University of Amsterdam. Her project, called “Beyond Disclosure: Bridging the Gap Between the Artificial Intelligence Act and the Charter of Fundamental Rights with Deepfaked Bodies,” looked at the legal and moral problems that arise when new AI laws and basic European rights clash.
Catharina-Amalia Beatrix Carmen Victoria is the princess’s full name. She was born in The Hague on December 7, 2003. Since her father, King Willem-Alexander, became king in April 2013, she has been known as Princess of Orange. She is the next queen of the Netherlands.
The event highlights a rising global worry about the use of AI to make sexually explicit content without permission, especially when it comes to famous people. Law enforcement and governments throughout the world are having a hard time dealing with the legal and moral issues that come up with this new type of digital crime.
