KYIV, Ukraine / MOSCOW, Russia – Overnight strikes rocked several regions of Ukraine, with officials reporting one person killed in Dnipro, while Moscow stated that two people died following a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia’s Rostov region.
In Dnipro, Mayor Borys Filatov confirmed the death of one individual in a high-rise flat complex. Filatov urged residents to take precautions during Russian attacks, advising against staying on upper floors, especially when underground parking areas are available for shelter.
Across the border in Russia, Yuri Sliusar, the acting governor of Rostov, posted on Telegram that a car caught fire after a drone strike, tragically resulting in two fatalities.
Ukrainian officials in Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia all reported coming under Russian fire overnight. Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov stated that his city endured “sustained bombardment for almost three hours,” with the enemy employing “several types of weapons simultaneously: guided bombs, ballistic missiles, and kamikaze drones.” In Zaporizhzhia, Governor Ivan Fedorov reported multiple fires after Russian drone attacks, with one hitting a residential building and another damaging a farm warehouse.
The ongoing hostilities come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to push for a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to end the war, with Kyiv having proposed talks by the end of August. However, the Kremlin on Thursday downplayed the likelihood of any such meeting being imminent.
Both sides maintain radically different positions at the negotiating table. Ukraine has accused Russia of sending only low-level officials with no real decision-making power, while Russia has called on Ukraine to effectively cede four regions that Moscow claims to have annexed – a demand Kyiv has consistently deemed unacceptable. Ukraine, meanwhile, continues to appeal to its Western allies for more weapons to bolster its defenses against daily Russian assaults.
