Carlos Alcaraz Begins Australian Open Campaign With Dominant Win

Melbourne [Australia]: Spanish tennis prodigy Carlos Alcaraz kicked off his quest for a career Grand Slam in style with a commanding first-round victory at the Australian Open. The 21-year-old defeated Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 7-5, 6-1 in a match that lasted one hour and 54 minutes on Monday.

Having already claimed two Wimbledon titles along with triumphs at the US Open and French Open, Alcaraz is eyeing his fifth major title. A win at the Australian Open would make him the youngest player ever to achieve a career Grand Slam—winning all four Grand Slam tournaments at least once.

Alcaraz displayed a mix of consistency and aggression, hitting 37 winners during the match. While he dominated the first set and led 3-1 in the second, a brief lapse in form allowed his opponent to take a 5-3 lead. However, Alcaraz quickly regained focus, increasing his precision and energy to secure the win.

Speaking about his performance, Alcaraz told ATP’s official website, “I am pleased to be through. I try to be the better version of myself every day. I work hard, and that is the secret to my best level.”

The young star credited his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, for his success. “It is great to have him. I always say being with Juan Carlos is fantastic. Last year he could not be here, and I was with Samuel [Lopez], who I trust 100 per cent and is my second coach, but I have been with Juan Carlos for six years now. He knows me well and knows how to get the best from me. It is a tournament we want to win one day, and hopefully this year,” Alcaraz said.

Notably, Ferrero missed last year’s Australian Open due to knee surgery. Alcaraz reached the quarterfinals in the tournament last season, which remains his best result at Melbourne Park. This year, he is seeded to potentially face Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals and Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.

In the next round, Alcaraz will face Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka as he continues his quest for history.
