London [UK], July 5: Carlos Alcaraz survived a stern test at Wimbledon on Friday, overcoming Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in four sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, to stretch his winning streak to 21 matches across all tournaments, according to the ATP Tour.
“I was suffering in every service game I did today,” Alcaraz admitted. “Love-30, break points down. It was stressful. He kept pushing me. I kind of survived and I am really happy that I got the break and it was done.”
Alcaraz, 21, is now eyeing history as he looks to become only the fifth man in the Open Era to win Wimbledon three years in a row. He has won 17 consecutive matches at the grass-court major.
The Spaniard is also trying to match Bjorn Borg’s rare feat of winning the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back in two consecutive years — a milestone Alcaraz moved closer to after his recent five-set victory over World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the Roland Garros final.
Reflecting on the match, Alcaraz said, “I knew at the beginning it was going to be really difficult… I am really pleased with everything I have done today — fighting, running, making great shots.”
Next, Alcaraz will face Russia’s Andrey Rublev, who defeated French qualifier Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 to set up the showdown. Rublev reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals last year.
Alcaraz’s 2025 season has already seen him lift trophies at the French Open, Monte Carlo, Rome, and Queen’s Club. His last defeat came in April at the Barcelona final.
