Canada Reaffirms Support For Ukraine Amid Global Debate On Aid

Ottawa [Canada]: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reiterated Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine, emphasizing the broader global stakes involved in the war.

In a speech shared on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, “Canada will always stand up for Ukraine,” Trudeau underscored that Ukraine’s battle is not just about its sovereignty but also about defending the global rules-based order.

“Ukrainians have been fighting and dying not just to protect their sovereignty, their territorial integrity. They’re also fighting to protect the rules-based order that keeps us all safe around the world, and has, for close to eighty years now,” Trudeau said.

Global Stability at Stake

Trudeau stressed that international stability relies on upholding key principles, adding:

“This period of peace, stability, and prosperity for the world happens because we had rules around borders, around not invading your neighbors—rules that Russia chose deliberately to violate a number of years ago.”

He reaffirmed Canada’s alignment with its allies, stating:

“That is why Canada and our allies are unequivocal on standing up against Vladimir Putin’s illegal, immoral, unjust violations of the international order. I’m looking forward to sitting down with my European partners in a couple of hours to talk about how we will continue to stand unequivocally in defense of Ukraine, but also in defense of the rules that keep us all safe.”

Trump’s Criticism of U.S. Aid to Ukraine

Trudeau’s remarks come amid renewed scrutiny of international financial aid to Ukraine, following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments questioning America’s level of investment in the war.

Trump alleged that the U.S. has spent USD 200 billion more than Europe in supporting Ukraine and received no financial return, whereas Europe has contributed “guaranteed” funding. He also criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, claiming that the war “couldn’t be won” and “never had to start.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote:

“Think of it, a modestly successful comedian, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, talked the United States of America into spending USD 350 billion dollars, to go into a war that couldn’t be won, that never had to start, but a war that he, without the US and ‘TRUMP,’ will never be able to settle.”

He further labeled Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections,” raising concerns over governance and accountability in Ukraine.

Canada’s Continued Support

Despite the ongoing debate over aid contributions, Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to Ukraine, standing alongside its European and NATO allies to counter Russia’s aggression. Trudeau’s speech signals that Canada will continue to back Ukraine militarily, diplomatically, and financially to uphold global stability and international law.
