New Delhi, October 13, 2025—Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met with Canada’s Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, in New Delhi during her inaugural visit to India since assuming the role. Both leaders expressed a firm commitment to revitalizing and strengthening the bilateral partnership between the two major democracies.
According to a government statement, Prime Minister Modi conveyed that Foreign Minister Anand’s visit would “impart new momentum” to the India–Canada bilateral relationship, signaling a forward-looking approach to cooperation.
Building on G7 Momentum
During the high-level meeting, PM Modi took the opportunity to recall his previous engagement with the Canadian leadership. He referenced his visit to Canada in June for the G7 Summit, where he had a “productive meeting” with his Canadian counterpart, Prime Minister Mark Carney. This reference underscores the effort to build on recent high-level political dialogues to solidify the partnership.

Foreign Minister Anand’s Confirmation
Following the meeting, Foreign Minister Anand shared details of the discussions on the social media platform X. She affirmed that the two nations are actively working to improve relations.
“I met with Prime Minister @narendramodi this morning in New Delhi. Building on the momentum of Prime Minister @MarkJCarney’s meeting with PM Modi this summer at the G7 Summit, Canada and India are elevating the relationship between our countries, while maintaining our law enforcement and security dialogue and expanding our economic relationship,” Anand stated in her post.
Full Itinerary and Bilateral Discussions
Foreign Minister Anand arrived in New Delhi on Sunday as the first stop on a three-nation tour that also includes China and Singapore.
Earlier on Monday, she held a comprehensive meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Minister Jaishankar emphasized that both countries should forge stronger and broader ties, suggesting this cooperation is essential not only to “de-risk the international economy” but also to shepherd the process of rebuilding the bilateral framework.
Having assumed charge as Canada’s Foreign Minister in May, this marks Anand’s first official visit to India in this capacity. She is also scheduled to meet with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to focus on tangible measures to boost two-way trade and investment.
