“Local Police Was Completely Inactive And Absent, Local Councillor Involved”: Calcutta High Court Committee Report On Murshidabad Violence

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India]: The fact-finding committee established by the Calcutta High Court has submitted its detailed report on the recent violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, particularly in the village of Betbona. The report highlights that 113 homes were severely damaged during the unrest.

According to the findings, most of the affected residents sought refuge in Malda but were forced to return to Betbona by the local police administration.

The committee’s report states, “Attacks were directed by a local councilor,” further noting that the “Local Police was completely inactive and absent.”

Residents have expressed a strong demand for the establishment of permanent BSF camps and deployment of Central Armed Forces to ensure their safety.

The report mentions, “The West Bengal Police did not respond. The villager of Betbona called at 4p.m. on Friday and 4p.m on Saturday but police did not pick up the call.”

Adding to the horror, the committee revealed, “A man came back to the village and saw which houses were not attacked and then the miscreants came and set fire to those house.”

Villagers remain in fear, with one individual cited in the report saying, “Villagers are constantly being threatened by the miscreants, wondering how long the BSF will protect them.”

In a disturbing detail, the report notes that miscreants deliberately cut off water connections, hindering efforts to extinguish fires. It further stated, “The miscreants have burnt all the clothes in the house with the kerosene oil and the women of the house had no clothes to cover her body.”

The destruction extended beyond homes—grocery stores, hardware shops, and textile and electrical outlets were also vandalized. Crucial documents were reportedly destroyed in the Dhuliyan area as well.

According to the report, the main attack occurred after 2:30 PM on April 11 in Dhuliyan town. A shopping mall in Ward No. 12 was completely looted and then shut down.

The report also documents a brutal double murder:
“They broke down the main door of the house and took her son (Chandan Das) and took her husband [Haragovinda Das] and hit them with an axe in the back. A man was waiting there until they died.”

The fact-finding committee included Joginder Singh (Registrar – Law, National Human Rights Commission), Satya Arnab Ghosal (Member Secretary, West Bengal Legal Services Authority), and Saugata Chakraborty (Registrar, West Bengal Judicial Service).
