Brutal Assault in Minneapolis: Anti-ICE Protester Allegedly Bites Off Federal Officer’s Finger

The volatile situation in Minneapolis reached a gruesome new low on Saturday, January 24, 2026, as federal officials reported that a protester bit off the finger of a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent. The incident occurred amidst widespread civil unrest following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, by a Border Patrol agent earlier that day.

Graphic Evidence and Federal Response Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin brought international attention to the assault by sharing graphic photos on X (formerly Twitter) showing the officer’s severed finger preserved in a jar. She confirmed the severity of the injury, stating simply, “He will lose his finger.”

The post was quickly reshared by President Donald Trump on Truth Social, heightening the national focus on the escalating violence in Minnesota.

Charges Filed by the Attorney General U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi confirmed later that evening that a suspect is in custody. Bondi expressed outrage over the “heinous assault” and directed federal prosecutors to charge the individual to the fullest extent of the law.

“I have directed my federal prosecutors to file charges for this HEINOUS assault on our brave law enforcement officer,” Bondi stated on social media.

While the suspect’s identity has not been formally released by the DOJ, the arrest follows a pattern of high-profile detentions in the area, including the recent arrest of civil rights activist Nekima Levy Armstrong in connection with separate anti-ICE demonstrations at a St. Paul church.

A City on the Edge The assault is the latest flashpoint in what the Department of Homeland Security has described as its largest-ever immigration enforcement operation. Tensions in the Twin Cities have been at a breaking point since the January 7 killing of Renee Nicole Good and the subsequent death of Alex Pretti on Saturday.

Governor Tim Walz has activated the Minnesota National Guard to provide security at federal buildings, even as he calls for the Trump administration to pull federal agents out of the state, labeling the operation an “absolute abomination.”
