Hyderabad (Telangana) [India]: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha on Thursday urged the Telangana government to introduce three separate bills for Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation, focusing on education, employment, and political representation.
Speaking to media about the issue, Kavitha highlighted the significant proportion of OBCs in the state’s population, which stands at 46% according to government data. She emphasized the need for dedicated legislation to address their demands.
“Demand for OBC reservation and 46% according to the government is the population of OBCs in the state… We want the government to introduce 3 different bills in the Assembly. Today, there is a cabinet meeting discussion happening, so my demand to the Telangana government is that they introduce 3 different bills: one for education, one for employment, and one for political reservation for OBCs,” said K Kavitha.
She also called for a separate bill ensuring 46% reservation for OBCs in local bodies, asserting that such a move would demonstrate the government’s commitment to social justice.
In addition, Kavitha addressed the BJP’s victory in the recent Telangana MLC elections, asserting that the results did not represent true democracy. She criticized the lack of BC (Backward Classes) candidates fielded by major parties.
“This election is a direct reflection of what we were propagating in the last one and a half years. No party gave tickets to BC candidates. Both parties gave tickets to upper castes. BRS did not contest the elections… A BC candidate gave stiff competition to both national party candidates. If either party had given a ticket to a BC candidate, it would have been justified… This election is not a reflection of true democracy,” Kavitha remarked.
The MLC elections were held on February 27 in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, with the votes counted on March 3. BJP’s Malka Komaraiah won from the Medak-Karimnagar-Adilabad-Nizamabad (Teachers) Constituency, while Chinnamail Anji Reddy secured victory in the Karimnagar-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Medak (Graduate) Constituency.
Additionally, Independent candidate Sripal Reddy Pingili won the Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Teachers’ MLC election.
On February 27, Telangana Chief Electoral Officer C. Sudharshan Reddy reported a 93.55% voter turnout in the Nalgonda Teachers’ constituency, describing the overall voting process as peaceful without any untoward incidents.
