The Brown University community in Providence, Rhode Island, is grappling with profound grief as the second victim of Saturday’s fatal on-campus shooting has been identified. Freshman Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov lost his life after being tragically shot, with his family confirming his identity through a GoFundMe campaign launched on Sunday.
Remembering a ‘Kind, Funny, and Smart’ Dreamer
Umurzokov’s family created the online fundraiser to gather support, offering a moving tribute to the young student:
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart,” the GoFundMe stated. “He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people. He continues to be my family’s biggest role model in all aspects.”
“He always lent a helping hand to anyone in need without hesitation, and was the most kind-hearted person our family knew,” the campaign added. “Our family is incredibly devastated by this loss.”
Reports indicated that Umurzokov was fatally shot while he was at the campus, reportedly to attend an economics review session.
Community Rallies in Support
The fundraising campaign saw a massive surge of support, highlighting the impact the student had on those around him. A target of $90,000 was set to cover expenses related to his death, with more than $78,000 raised within just two hours of the GoFundMe’s launch.
The Two Victims
Umurzokov is the second student confirmed to have been fatally shot in the incident on Saturday.
Earlier on Sunday, the other victim was identified as sophomore Ella Cook from Birmingham, Alabama. Cook was identified by a parish in her hometown during a prayer meet held in her honor on Sunday afternoon, marking a tragic double loss for the prestigious university.
