Silchar (Assam) [India], June 18: A major bridge collapse occurred on Tuesday night at Harang bridge in Bhangarpar, along the Kalain-Silchar road in Assam, sending two heavily loaded trucks crashing into the river below. Rescue and restoration operations are currently underway. Authorities have yet to confirm any casualties, and more details are awaited.
This incident comes close on the heels of a deadly bridge collapse in Maharashtra’s Pune district, where a structure over the Indrayani River gave way on Sunday, leading to the deaths of four individuals and injuring dozens.
Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi confirmed that 55 people fell into the river due to the collapse. Of them, 51 were rescued, and 38 are still undergoing treatment. An aerial survey was conducted to ensure no one remains missing, and a multi-departmental probe has been launched, involving officials from the PWD, Irrigation, Forest Department, and Police.
A compensation of ₹5 lakh has been announced for the families of the deceased. Dudi also stressed the importance of avoiding such vulnerable areas during the monsoon and has requested structural assessments of all old bridges in the district to avert similar tragedies in the future.
