Guwahati (Assam): The Brahmaputra Riverfront Development Project in Guwahati is progressing rapidly, with authorities aiming to complete the ambitious initiative by April 2025.
Key Highlights of the Project:
- Undertaken by Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSL) under the Assam government.
- Spanning six kilometers from Rajbhawan to Kamakhya Temple on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River.
- Features include:
- Walkways, cycle tracks, and jogging tracks
- Gardens, fountains, and viewpoints
- Jetties and ferry terminals to improve river transport
Government’s Vision for the Project
Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah emphasized the project’s significance in boosting tourism and local economic activities. He stated:
“The Guwahati Riverfront beautification works are ongoing and will be completed by April. After this, Guwahati will become a major tourist destination. We are constructing two to three gardens and adding new features under the leadership of our CM.”
The Brahmaputra Riverfront is envisioned as an iconic landmark for Guwahati, offering a modern recreational space for people of all age groups.
Inauguration & Future Plans
- The first phase of the riverfront was inaugurated on January 20, 2024, by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
- Additional beautification projects are in the pipeline to further enhance Guwahati’s urban appeal.
With rapid development underway, the Brahmaputra Riverfront is set to become a vibrant cultural and tourist hub, enhancing Guwahati’s identity as a modern riverside city.
