New Delhi [India], January 5: BJP Delhi state president Virendraa Sachdeva has weighed in on the controversy surrounding BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri’s purported comment in a viral video, emphasizing the importance of respecting women and stating that such remarks should be avoided.
The controversy sparked after a video shared by AAP MP Sanjay Singh on X, in which Bidhuri allegedly made a statement about the roads in Kalkaji, likening them to “the cheeks of Priyanka Gandhi” if BJP were to come to power.
While Sachdeva condemned the remark, he also took aim at Congress for its perceived “double standards,” pointing out that the party often remains silent when similar comments are made about BJP MP Hema Malini. “I have not heard Ramesh Bidhuri’s full statement, but women have a special contribution in society and should be respected. Any such comment should be avoided. However, Congress needs to give up its double standards. When any statement is made about our MP Hema Malini, they applaud. But I still say that no one should think of insulting women,” Sachdeva said.
The remark also drew criticism from Congress, with leader Supriya Shrinate strongly condemning it. She called it “shameful” and accused the BJP of fostering an anti-women mindset. Shrinate added that the statement reflected a “disgusting” mentality toward women.
In the midst of the controversy, Ramesh Bidhuri, BJP’s candidate for Kalkaji in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, expressed regret over his remarks. He explained that his comments were made in response to previous remarks by Lalu Yadav and criticized Congress for remaining silent when similar statements were made by the former minister. “Such statements have been made before. I said it in the context of what Lalu Yadav had said. Congress remained silent when he was a minister in their government. If anyone is hurt by my remark, I express regret and take my words back,” Bidhuri clarified.
