New Delhi [India]: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Satish Upadhyay secured a crucial victory in the Malviya Nagar constituency, defeating three-time Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti by a margin of 2,131 votes, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Following the win, Aarti Upadhyay, wife of Satish Upadhyay, expressed gratitude to the voters and assured them of speedy development in the constituency, which she claimed had deteriorated under AAP’s rule.
“BJP gave a huge responsibility to Satish. Malviya Nagar’s condition had deteriorated, and we were assured that the people here would vote for BJP… Now, development will speed up in Delhi… I thank PM Modi for showing faith in all of the party’s candidates,” she told ANI.
Upadhyay’s daughters, Sumedha and Shivika, attributed the victory to their father’s groundwork and the relentless efforts of BJP workers.
“Now, the vision of ‘Viksit Delhi’ will be fulfilled, and we all will work for the betterment of Malviya Nagar,” Sumedha stated.
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who lost the New Delhi assembly seat, acknowledged the election results and congratulated BJP on their victory. He urged the party to deliver on its campaign promises and assured that AAP would play a constructive role in opposition while continuing to serve the people.
The BJP is set to form the government in Delhi after 27 years, having last ruled from 1993 to 1998.
As per the latest figures from the Election Commission, BJP has won 37 seats and is leading in 11 more, taking its total to 48 seats. AAP has won 17 seats and is leading on five, while Congress has failed to win a single seat for the third consecutive time.
Polling for the 70-member Delhi Assembly was conducted on February 5, with a total voter turnout of 60.54%.
